Abstract

Tomato (Solanum lycopersicum L.) is an important horticultural crop that requires high-quality seeds to achieve optimal growth and development. One approach to improving the physiological quality of seeds is organic priming using environmentally friendly natural materials. Moringa (Moringa oleifera L.) leaves contain various bioactive compounds, including cytokinins, auxins, vitamins, minerals, and antioxidants, which have the potential to enhance seed germination and vigor. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of organic priming with moringa leaf extract on tomato seed germination and vigor and to determine the most effective extract concentration. The experiment was conducted at the Laboratory of Weetabula Catholic University from April to May 2026 using a Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with a single factor consisting of moringa leaf extract concentrations: P0 (0%), P1 (25%), P2 (50%), P3 (75%), and P4 (100%), with four replications. Tomato seeds were soaked in the extract solutions according to the treatments for 12 hours and subsequently germinated using the rolled paper test method. The observed variables included germination percentage, germination rate, vigor index, primary root length, plumule length, and seedling fresh weight. Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA) at the 5% significance level, followed by the Least Significant Difference (LSD) test at the 5% level. The results showed that organic priming with moringa leaf extract significantly affected all observed parameters. The P3 treatment (75% extract concentration) produced the best results, with a germination percentage of 96.25%, germination rate of 22.08% day⁻¹, vigor index of 89.50, primary root length of 5.95 cm, plumule length of 7.43 cm, and seedling fresh weight of 0.69 g. The P3 treatment did not differ significantly from P2 (50%) but differed significantly from P4 (100%), P1 (25%), and P0 (control). Therefore, moringa leaf extract at a concentration of 75% was the most effective treatment for improving tomato seed germination and vigor and has potential as an inexpensive, environmentally friendly, and sustainable seed enhancement technology
