Elderly people are those who have reached the age of 60 years and experience many declines, one of which is functional decline. The prevalence of hypertension increases annually due to various factors, one of which is influenced by unhealthy diets. According to the Indonesian Health Survey in 2023, the prevalence of hypertension was 30.8%. The highest prevalence of hypertension in West Sumatra was in Padang City, at 35.6%. Lubuk Buaya Community Health Center was determined as one of the health centers with the highest hypertension rate in Padang City, at 12,171 people. The purpose of this study was to examine the relationship between dietary patterns and the incidence of hypertension in the elderly at Lubuk Buaya Community Health Center, Padang City in 2025. This research is a quantitative study using an analytical observational method with a cross-sectional design. The population consisted of 485 elderly individuals who visited the Lubuk Buaya Public Health Center. A total of 86 respondents were selected using purposive sampling. Data were collected through questionnaires and blood pressure measurements, and then analyzed using the Chi-square test. The research results indicate that more than half of the respondents, 72 (83.7%), elderly individuals at the Lubuk Buaya Health Center in Padang City, experience grade 2 hypertension, and more than half of the respondents, 51 (59.3%), elderly individuals have poor eating habits. There is a significant relationship between eating habits and the incidence of hypertension in the elderly, with a p-value of 0.000 (p < 0.05). This suggests that elderly individuals with unhealthy eating patterns tend to have a higher risk of experiencing hypertension compared to those with healthy eating patterns It can be concluded that there is a significant relationship between dietary patterns and the incidence of hypertension among the elderly. Therefore, health education and promotion regarding the importance of a healthy and balanced diet are necessary to prevent and control hypertension in older adults.
