Abstract

This article explores the evolution of peace studies through the intellectual contributions of Johan Galtung, a pioneering figure in the field. It examines Galtung's ideas of triangle of violence, negative and positive peace, and conflict transformation, which underlie a new direction in contemporary peace studies. The purpose of this research is to understand Galtung's theoretical contribution to the formation of a more comprehensive and multidimensional peace paradigm. This article employs a literature study approach, drawing on Galtung's major works, as well as relevant books and articles. The results of the study demonstrate that Galtung's thinking has successfully broadened the understanding of peace. The conceptual framework also provides a foundation for a peacebuilding approach that emphasizes the transformation of social relations and community participation. However, Galtung's thinking has also been criticized for being idealistic and difficult to apply universally. Overall, this article suggests the need for Galtung's concepts to remain relevant in responding to increasingly complex global challenges and peace.  Keywords—Conflict Transformation, Negative and Positive Peace, Peacebuilding, Peace Studies, Triangle of Violence
