Abstract

Cepu is one of the Dutch colonial cities in Indonesia. Even though it is not a big city, Cepu was world- famous for its oil production in the first four decades of the 20th century. This study aims to map the formation and growth of the city of Cepu from the early period to the present within a regional mapping framework using historical methods. The analysis is based on historical events related to the area and settlements of the city's population in each historical period. The results of this study show that initially, residential areas were concentrated on the banks of the Bengawan Solo River. At the beginning of the 20th century, the colonial Dutch East Indies planned and built the city of Cepu, which was quite representative, located "in the middle" of existing old villages, extending in a northeast - southwest direction.
