Abstract

Abstract Preterm birth is a leading cause of mortality among children under five years old, with maternal anemia as one of its major risk factors. Limited knowledge and poor adherence among pregnant women in consuming iron supplementation tablets may increase the risk of anemia, which contributes to preterm birth. This study aimed to analyze the association between pregnant women’s knowledge levels and their adherence to iron supplementation tablets in preventing preterm birth at community health centers in Makassar City. This cross-sectional study involved 117 pregnant women from four community health centers in Makassar (Sudiang, Tamalanrea, BTN Antara, and Kassi-Kassi). Data were collected using a knowledge questionnaire and the Medication Adherence Rating Scale (MARS). The results showed that 58.1% of pregnant women were adherent to iron supplementation tablets. Bivariate analysis indicated significant associations between education duration of more than 12 years (OR: 4.911; 95% CI: 1.847–13.057; p=0.001) and employment status (OR: 2.622; 95% CI: 1.064–6.461; p=0.036) with adherence. Multivariate analysis revealed that a good level of knowledge was significantly associated with adherence (AOR: 6.613; 95% CI: 1.484–29.456; p=0.013). Higher knowledge levels were associated with better adherence to iron supplementation tablets. Keywords:  Adherence, Iron, Suplementation Tablets, Knowledge, Pregnant Women, Preterm Birth
