Abstract

Waste management remains a persistent environmental challenge in rural areas of Indonesia, particularly in Sukaresik Village, Sukaresik District, Tasikmalaya Regency, West Java. This community service study documents and analyzes an integrated waste management intervention implemented by Student’s Community Service Program or also known as KKN (Kuliah Kerja Nyata) of Universitas Padjadjaran in July–August 2026. The program encompassed two complementary initiatives: (1) ecobrick creation workshops targeting Class X students at SMKN Sukaresik, and (2) installation of communal waste receptacles (hong/buis beton) in the hamlets of Sindangharja and Sukamanah. A participatory action approach was employed, combining educational sessions with direct community involvement. Results indicate that the ecobrick program successfully transformed plastic waste into functional school furniture including desks, chairs, waste bins, plant pots, and decorative items, while simultaneously imparting knowledge of the 3R (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle) principles to 25 students. The hong installation program equipped two critical waste-prone locations with concrete waste receptacles accompanied by informational signage and community clean-up activities. The program demonstrated that integrated, dual-track interventions combining educational outreach with tangible infrastructure provision are effective in addressing localized waste management challenges in rural settings. Sustainability of outcomes hinges on continued stakeholder participation, school follow-through, and local government monitoring.
