<![CDATA[Abstract Karapan Kambing is a traditional goat racing practice that lives and develops in Probolinggo City, East Java. Located on the northern coast of Java and directly facing Madura Island, Probolinggo has a multicultural society shaped by the long interaction between Javanese and Madurese communities, giving rise to a unique local identity known as Pendalungan. This study aims to document Karapan Kambing as a living cultural object, examine its history and transformation as a form of local cultural adaptation, and provide an academic foundation for its nomination as Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage. Data were collected through literature review and interviews with key informants, including active practitioners and community leaders. The results show that Karapan Kambing emerged around the 1970s as a local adaptation of Karapan Sapi, which was considered too expensive for lower-income communities. Over time, the tradition evolved from a simple community pastime into an organized competitive event with structured rules, equipment, and a performance-based class system. Beyond recreation, Karapan Kambing serves as a medium for social cohesion, economic activity, and the reproduction of Pendalungan cultural identity. As of 2026, the tradition is actively sustained by 15 practitioners. This study concludes that Karapan Kambing holds significant historical, social, and cultural value for the people of Probolinggo City and is worthy of recognition as Indonesian Intangible Cultural Heritage.
