Abstract

Waste management in coastal areas is a critical environmental issue that directly impacts ecosystem quality, environmental aesthetics, and the sustainability of tourism activities. For instance, Tanjung Karang Beach in Mataram City faces exactly these challenges. The steadily increasing volume of waste originates from various sources, including tourists, local residents, fishermen, as well as debris carried by river currents and ocean waves. This study aims to assess the current waste conditions, evaluate the existing management system, and examine the active role of coastal communities in building a clean and sustainable environment. A descriptive method with a direct field observation approach was employed, supported by documentation and simple interviews conducted at Viral Bagek Kembar Beach, Tanjung Karang. The findings reveal that plastic waste dominantly covers the coastline. The current waste management system relies heavily on basic collection and transport, while waste segregation and processing activities have not been optimally implemented. Furthermore, limited infrastructure and low community participation remain the primary obstacles to effective waste management. Therefore, community empowerment efforts are highly necessary. These can be achieved through environmental education, the implementation of 3R principles (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), the establishment of environmental awareness groups, and the development of waste bank programs. Strong synergy among local citizens, government agencies, tourism stakeholders, and visitors is expected to support the realization of a clean, comfortable, and sustainable Tanjung Karang Beach.
