Abstract

Low self-esteem during adolescence highly correlates with chronic psychological distress and psychiatric morbidity, necessitating prompt school-based and domestic interventions. This study aimed to evaluate the effect of a combined Butterfly Hug and positive affirmation intervention on the self-esteem of junior high school students. A quasi-experimental, one-group pre-test and post-test design was applied to 27 junior high school students selected via purposive sampling. The combined intervention was administered twice daily (collectively at school and independently at home before sleep) over 7 consecutive days. Data were systematically analyzed using descriptive statistics and the Wilcoxon signed-ranks test in SPSS. The baseline pre-test indicated that 70.4% of students had moderate self-esteem and 29.6% had high self-esteem. Post-intervention analysis revealed a significant shift, with high self-esteem levels escalating to 85.2% (Z=−3.589, p=0.000). The dual-action therapy operates synergistically; the Butterfly Hug induces rapid somatic stabilization, lowering anxiety and expanding neurocognitive receptivity, which allows positive affirmations to effectively restructure maladaptive core beliefs. The combined intervention of the Butterfly Hug and positive affirmations significantly improves adolescent self-esteem, providing a scalable modal for community psychiatric nursing.
