Abstract

The increase in industrial activities and urbanization has led to higher levels of environmental noise, which negatively affect human comfort and health. This condition encourages the development of sound-absorbing materials that are not only effective but also environmentally friendly. The utilization of biomass waste, particularly oil palm fronds, represents a promising alternative due to their porous fiber structure and lignocellulosic content that support sound absorption. This study aims to analyze the effect of varying compositions of oil palm frond fibers and tapioca flour adhesive on the physical characteristics and acoustic performance of sound-absorbing materials. The research method includes material preparation, mixing with different composition ratios, molding and compaction using a press machine, and drying, followed by testing of sound absorption and material density. The results show that the sound absorption effectiveness ranges from 25% to 33%, while the material density ranges from 0.46 to 0.51 g/cm³. Increasing the proportion of fibers and reducing the adhesive content lead to a decrease in density and an increase in material porosity, which enhances sound absorption performance. The optimum composition was obtained at a ratio of 70:30 (fiber:adhesive), resulting in the highest sound absorption value of 33% and the lowest density. These findings indicate that pore structure and void distribution within the material play a more dominant role in determining acoustic performance than density alone. Therefore, controlling the internal structure of the material is a key factor in the development of biomass-based sound-absorbing materials.
