The aim of the research is to determine whether or not there are differences in students' mathematical communication abilities between those who use the experiential learning approach and students who use direct learning. This research is a Quasi Experimental research with a non-equivalent control group research design. The population in this study were all class VIII students at SMPN 48 Pekanbaru. The sample in this study was class VIII.1 as the control class and class VIII.2 as the experimental class. The sampling technique in this research is purposive sampling technique. The research instrument used was a test in the form of pretest and posttest questions on mathematical communication skills. Calculations carried out using the Mann-Whitney U test showed that was -4.776< -1.96. So the results of this research show that there are differences in the mathematical communication abilities of students who take part in learning using an experiential learning approach and students who take direct learning. Apart from that, the average N-Gain result for the experimental class was 0.7232 or 72%, which was included in the high category, while the control class was 0.516 or 52%, which was included in the medium category. The Mann-Whitney U test on the N-Gain score also produced = -4.759 < -1.96, which means there is a significant difference in improvement between the two groups. Thus, the experiential learning approach has proven to be effective in improving students' mathematical communication skills.
