Abstract

The tradition of visiting the graves of Islamic scholars remains an important religious practice among the Banjar community in South Kalimantan. One of the most frequently visited pilgrimage sites is the tomb of Syekh Abdurrahman Siddiq in Berangas Tengah Village, Barito Kuala Regency. This study aims to analyze the forms of public belief regarding the pilgrimage tradition to the tomb of Syekh Abdurrahman Siddiq, the factors influencing these beliefs, and the significance of the pilgrimage tradition for the local community. This research employed a qualitative approach using a descriptive method. Data were collected through observation, interviews, and documentation involving the descendants of Syekh Abdurrahman Siddiq, religious leaders, local residents, and pilgrims. Data were analyzed using the interactive model of Miles and Huberman, including data reduction, data display, and conclusion drawing, while data validity was ensured through source and technique triangulation. The findings reveal that the community regards Syekh Abdurrahman Siddiq as a pious Islamic scholar endowed with karamah (spiritual gifts). Consequently, the pilgrimage tradition is perceived as a form of respect, a means of praying for the deceased, performing tawassul to Allah, and seeking blessings. These beliefs are shaped by family traditions, the Banjar socio-cultural environment, religious sermons, annual haul commemorations, and religious experiences transmitted through oral tradition. Furthermore, the pilgrimage tradition carries religious, social, cultural, and historical significance by preserving Islamic values, honoring religious scholars, strengthening Banjar cultural identity, and maintaining the community's collective memory. Therefore, the pilgrimage tradition at the tomb of Syekh Abdurrahman Siddiq functions not only as a religious practice but also as a cultural heritage preserved and transmitted across generations.
