Abstract

This study aims to analyze the contribution of the school environment in building students' confidence in speaking Arabic at Madrasah Pembangunan Ciputat, focusing on grade 11 C. Using a qualitative approach with a descriptive case study method, data collection was conducted through direct field observations and in-depth interviews with key informants. All collected data was then analyzed in stages through data reduction, data presentation, and conclusion drawing. The results revealed a unique sociolinguistic paradox. On the one hand, the school's macro-environment was deemed unsupportive due to the lack of formal regulations or binding language habituation programs. However, on the other hand, the micro-ecosystem within the classroom was very effective in fostering students' verbal courage. This success at the micro-level was driven by two simultaneous factors. The first factor was the teachers' supportive and humanistic pedagogical approach, where teachers prioritized fluent communication over rigidly judging grammatical errors in public. The second factor was the dynamics of horizontal interactions among peers. Although often marked by mutual teasing in the form of group jokes, these relationships are grounded in a close sense of kinship, transforming into a group entertainment mechanism that hones students' mental resilience. Furthermore, psychological disparities based on educational background were found, with students graduating from Islamic boarding schools demonstrating more mature mental readiness than their peers from public schools. This study concludes that optimizing speaking skills in formal Islamic schools in urban areas is more determined by the creation of psychologically safe, interactive, and adaptive micro-classroom conditions, rather than simply imposing rigid institutional rules.
