The Keputih Fecal Sludge Treatment Plant (FSTP) in Surabaya is a facility that treats fecal sludge and has the potential to generate hydrogen sulfide (H₂S) gas through the anaerobic decomposition of organic matter. Exposure to H₂S may adversely affect human health, particularly the respiratory system of residents living near the facility. This study aimed to analyze the relationship between H₂S concentration and individual characteristics with respiratory complaints among residents living around the Keputih FSTP, Surabaya. An analytical observational study with a cross-sectional design was conducted involving 86 respondents selected from a population of 100 residents using simple random sampling. H₂S concentrations were measured at 12 monitoring points, while data on individual characteristics and respiratory complaints were collected using a structured questionnaire. Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate methods with Fisher’s Exact Test. The results indicated that most monitoring points had H₂S concentrations exceeding the applicable ambient air quality standard. The majority of respondents experienced mild respiratory complaints, followed by moderate and severe complaints. Statistical analysis showed that age, smoking habits, and H₂S exposure were significantly associated with respiratory complaints, whereas sex and length of residence were not significantly associated with respiratory complaints. These findings suggest that H₂S exposure, age, and smoking habits are important factors related to respiratory complaints among residents living near the Keputih FSTP. Therefore, efforts to control air pollution and conduct regular environmental monitoring are necessary to protect community health.
