Abstract

This study aims to analyze the effectiveness of the Problem-Based Learning (PBL) model in improving the social attitudes of elementary school students. The low social attitudes of students, such as lack of cooperation, empathy, tolerance, compliance with rules, and social responsibility, became the main background of this research. The dominant teacher-centered learning approach that provides limited space for interaction and collaboration is one of the contributing factors. PBL as a student-centered learning model is considered capable of developing students' social attitudes through group discussion processes, collaborative problem-solving, and teamwork. This research employed a quantitative approach with a pre-experimental design (One-Group Pretest-Posttest Design). The research subjects were 21 fifth-grade students at SD Negeri Cicurug. The instrument used was a social attitude questionnaire developed based on five dimensions of social attitudes. The results showed that the average pretest score was 87.95 (moderate category), while the average posttest score increased to 96.19 (high category). The paired sample t-test yielded a significance value of 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant effect of PBL on improving students' social attitudes. The N-Gain value of 0.51 (moderate category) and 100% mastery completeness confirmed that the PBL model is very effective in enhancing social attitudes. This research contributes to the development of innovative learning models in elementary schools that not only improve cognitive aspects but also develop students' social attitudes.
