Dynamics of Cultural Resilience Max Weber's Social Action Theory in the Preservation of the Pene Lando Ritual Among the Sasak Tribe in the Modern Era

Globalization and rapid modernization frequently pose significant threats to indigenous traditions and local cultural identities. Despite these transformative global influences, the Sasak people of Pene Village, Jerowaru District, East Lombok, continue to preserve the Pene Lando traditional ritual. This article examines the ritualistic processes of Pene Lando and analyzes the underlying rationalities that motivate the community to maintain this cultural practice, employing Max Weber's Social Action Theory as an analytical framework. Through a qualitative methodology incorporating sociological and phenomenological approaches, the study finds that the ritual's preservation results from a complex interplay of traditional, value-rational, instrumental-rational, and affective actions. Traditional action emerges as the most dominant factor, rooted in ancestral reverence. Additionally, the ritual embodies significant social, religious, and cultural values that strengthen community cohesion, spiritual gratitude, and cultural identity. The findings demonstrate that tradition and modernity are not inherently incompatible; instead, traditional communities adaptively employ social rationalities to protect their heritage from the homogenizing effects of globalization.
