Abstract

Background: The absence of a comprehensive assessment of stunting risk factors in Pacitan Regency, Indonesia, despite the high prevalence of stunting at 20.6%, is crucial for this research. Objectives: The study sought to examine risk factors associated with stunting, grouped by the child's characteristics, the mother's pregnancy and birth history, the parents' and family's attributes, and health-related habits. Methods: Between August and September 2023, a case-control study was conducted at the Arjosari Community Health Centre in Pacitan Regency. The sample comprised children aged 6–59 months, chosen via purposive sampling. The research comprised 29 children with stunting as cases and 58 children without stunting as controls, matched by age, gender, and neighbourhood. Data were collected using pre-established survey questionnaires. Chi-square tests and multiple logistic regression analyses determined factors significantly linked to stunting (p-value<0.05). Results: Low birth weight was the most significant factor connected with stunting (p-value<0.001; OR=6.70; 95% CI: 2.42-18.59). The odds of stunting were 6.7 times higher for children with a history of LBW than those with normal birth weight. First births were also significantly associated with stunting and were a protective factor (p-value=0.045; OR=0.38; 95% CI: 0.15–0.99). Conclusions: Children of primiparous mothers have 62% lower odds of stunting than those of multiparous mothers. No significant association was found between the other examined factors and stunting risk.
