Abstract

The Nicene Creed has long stood as the church's foundational confession concerning the identity of Christ, yet studies on this creed have generally remained confined to the level of doctrinal theological discourse and have not adequately explored how the creed is genuinely lived out in the daily life of the congregation. This study aims to analyze the theological meaning of the concept of homoousios within the Christology of the Nicene Creed based on biblical and patristic study, and to analyze the relevance of this Christology for the life of the congregation today. The research employs a qualitative method with a library research approach. Data were gathered from primary sources, namely creedal documents and the thought of the Church Fathers as presented in various scholarly studies, along with secondary sources consisting of relevant theological journals and books, then processed through descriptive analytical content analysis. The findings show that the concept of homoousios developed by Athanasius affirms the consubstantiality of Christ with God the Father as both a biblical and theological response to the teaching of Arius, an idea firmly rooted in the scriptural witness of the Word becoming flesh. The Christology of Nicaea also proves relevant as a fence of orthodoxy, a foundation for congregational spirituality, a basis for relational ethics, and a contextual challenge for today's congregation, including within the Toraja cultural context. This study concludes that the appropriation of the Nicene Creed is not merely a dogmatic legacy of the past but a living source that continues to shape the faith and character of the congregation today.
