Coffee grounds as liquid organic fertilizer for water spinach at Kampoeng Pintar Oase Surabaya

Abstract

The growth of water spinach at Kampoeng Pintar Oase, Tembok Gede, Surabaya indicates nutrient limitations in the growing medium that hinder urban agricultural productivity. Coffee grounds have the potential to be utilized as raw material for liquid organic fertilizer (LOF) through fermentation using fermented stale rice. This study aims to assess the quality of LOF made from fermented coffee grounds, analyze the effect of its application on water spinach growth, and determine the most effective concentration for supporting vegetative growth. The study was conducted using a quantitative descriptive design with four POC concentration treatments: P0 (control consisting of distilled water without added nutrients), P1 (25 mL), P2 (50 mL), and P3 (75 mL), each with three replicates. POC was anaerobically fermented using coffee grounds, fermented rice water, and molasses. The results showed that increasing the concentration of coffee-ground POC enhanced water spinach growth, particularly in terms of plant height, number of leaves, and fresh weight. The 75 mL concentration yielded the highest results. Although the organic carbon content of the POC did not fully meet optimal standards, the POC was still able to support plant growth because it contained macro- and micronutrients as well as organic compounds resulting from fermentation.
