Abstract

Misalignment and rotor unbalance are common faults in rotating machinery that can cause excessive vibration, uneven wear, and reduced machine performance. Motor current measurement provides a potentially low-cost alternative or complementary approach to vibration-based condition monitoring. This study investigates the relationship between vibration and motor current under normal, parallel misalignment, angular misalignment, and rotor unbalance conditions in an induction motor. Experiments were conducted at rotational speeds from 1800 to 2400 rpm under normal operating conditions, with parallel misalignment of 1 and 2 mm, angular misalignment of 1° and 2°, and rotor unbalance masses of 14.7, 18.1, and 21.5 g. Vibration and motor current signals were measured and compared to identify characteristic changes associated with each fault condition. The results showed that motor current increased by more than 10% relative to the normal operating current under misalignment conditions, whereas rotor unbalance was associated with a current reduction of more than 4% relative to the normal condition. These results indicate a measurable relationship between vibration and motor current and demonstrate the potential of motor current as a simple and cost-effective parameter for early fault identification.
