Abstract

Power transformers are one of the main components in power generation systems that function to transfer electrical energy from the generator to the transmission network. Transformer reliability plays a vital role in maintaining the continuity of electrical power supply because transformer failures may cause operational interruptions and significant economic losses. Therefore, an effective maintenance strategy is required to detect potential failures at an early stage before they develop into severe damage. This study aims to analyze the reliability of a power transformer based on preventive maintenance using Thermovision and Dissolved Gas Analysis (DGA) methods at the Generator Transformer Unit 3 of Tanjung Jati B Steam Power Plant. The research was conducted through literature review, field observation, periodic inspection data collection, infrared thermography analysis, visual inspection, and transformer oil condition assessment according to IEEE C57.104 and IEC 60422 standards. The analyzed parameters include oil temperature, winding temperature, Low Voltage (LV) duct temperature, cooling system performance, oil leakage, silica gel condition, leakage current, and visual inspection results. The results indicate that the highest transformer temperature was observed at the LV duct, reaching 56.8°C, while oil and winding temperatures reached 53°C and 56°C, respectively. All visual inspection parameters remained within normal conditions without evidence of oil leakage, mechanical defects, or cooling system malfunction. Therefore, the generator transformer is considered reliable, and preventive maintenance has proven effective in detecting potential transformer failures before operational disturbances occur.
