Abstract

Objectives: This study aims to determine whether there are differences in mandibular ramus width between males and females through radimorphometric analysis. Materials and Methods: This study used an analytical observational cross-sectional design. A total of 160 panoramic radiographs, consisting of 80 male and 80 female radiographs, were obtained from the digital database of the Radiology Department at the Universitas Trisakti Dental and Oral Hospital from January 2024 to May 2025. The samples were selected using simple random sampling and met the predetermined inclusion and exclusion criteria. The instrument used for the measurements was i-Dixel software version 2.2. Ramus width was measured by first establishing the midline of the mandible and then shifting the midline until it was  parallel to the most concave point of the external oblique line on the anterior aspect of the ramus. A perpendicular line was subsequently drawn from this point to the posterior border of the ramus. The obtained data were analyzed using SPSS through descriptive analysis, followed by a non-parametric Mann–Whitney test. Results: The mean values were 23.61 ± 1.68 mm for the male group and 21.55 ± 1.68 mm for the female group. The Mann–Whitney test showed a significance value of p < 0.001 (p ≤ 0.05). Conclusion: The result of this study confirms that males have greater mandibular ramus width than females, as shown through radiomorphometric analysis.
