Abstract

Character education at the elementary level is a primary focus in efforts to strengthen moral values in the younger generation. This study aims to test the effectiveness of a program internalizing the values of respect, intimacy, moderation, manners, and humanism in improving politeness among elementary school students at SDN 2 Nagrikaler, Purwakarta District, and SDN 2 Lebakanyar, Pasawahan District. The method used was a quasi -experimental design with an experimental group (n = 300) receiving a constructive reflective intervention for one semester, and a control group (n = 300) implementing a standard curriculum. The main instrument was the Student Politeness Score (SKS) consisting of five value subdimensions measured through a standardized questionnaire (Cronbach's α = 0.86) and classroom observations (Cohen's κ = 0.81). Data analysis was conducted using ANCOVA to control for pre- test differences and MANOVA to assess multivariate effects on the five value dimensions. ANCOVA results showed a significant increase in the experimental group's credits compared to the control group (F(1,596)=84.73, p < 0.001). MANOVA revealed a significant multivariate effect on all grade dimensions (Wilks' Λ=0.73, p < 0.001), with a mean increase of 0.85–1.02 points on a 5-point scale, respectively. Qualitative findings from teacher interviews supported an increase in polite behavior as well as active participation in the development of the classroom code of conduct. In conclusion, the program internalizing the values of respect, intimacy, moderation, etiquette, and humanism has proven effective in improving politeness and character dimensions in elementary school students. These findings provide an empirical basis for national character education policy and suggest the application of a similar intervention model on a broader
