Abstract

“Human factors such as knowledge, work fatigue, attitudes, and manual material handling practices are considered important determinants of occupational accidents among loading and unloading workers. This study aimed to determine the relationship between human factors and occupational accidents among loading and unloading workers at Balohan Port, Sabang. This study used a quantitative design with a cross-sectional approach. The population consisted of all freelance loading and unloading workers at Balohan Port, with a total sample of 37 respondents selected using the total population technique. Data were collected through interviews using standardized questionnaires and analyzed using Fisher’s Exact Test. The results showed that most respondents had good knowledge (75.7%), moderate work fatigue (73%), positive attitudes toward occupational safety (73%), and fairly good manual material handling practices (67.6%). Occupational accidents were still relatively high at 59.5%. Bivariate analysis showed a significant relationship between work fatigue (p-value =0.028) and attitude (p-value =0.028) with occupational accidents. Meanwhile, knowledge (p-value =0.056) and manual material handling (p-value =0.073) were not significantly associated with occupational accidents. The study concludes that work fatigue and worker attitudes are dominant factors related to occupational accidents among loading and unloading workers at Balohan Port.
