Abstract

This article examines the tarbawī (pedagogical) dimension of Firdaws al-Naʿīm bi Tawḍīḥ Maʿānī Āyāt al-Qurʾān al-Karīm, a complete thirty-juz Arabic commentary by Kiai Thaifur ʿAli Wafa of Sumenep that is taught daily at Pesantren Assadad in Madura. It argues that the tarbawī character of pesantren tafsīr is not inherent in the words on the page; rather, it emerges from the interpretive event in which the commentary is composed, taught, and received. Drawing on Hans-Georg Gadamer’s philosophical hermeneutics, the study reconstructs the commentary’s pedagogical milieu, the Vorurteil that shapes its composition, the resulting exegetical form, and the tarbawī spectrum produced by the fusion of horizons. This spectrum comprises five registers: al-tarbiyah al-lughawīyah, al-tarbiyah al-kalāmīyah, al-tarbiyah al-fiqhīyah, al-tarbiyah al-ijtimāʿīyah, and al-tarbiyah al-ṣūfīyah. The article contributes to scholarship on tafsīr tarbawī by proposing a category not confined to textual content; to scholarship on pesantren tafsīr by introducing a neglected analytical lens; and to the study of scriptural pedagogy by demonstrating that a commentary acquires its meaning in the setting in which it is taught.
