Abstract

Hand-drawn batik artisans in Sendangduwur Village, Lamongan Regency, still utilize traditional workstations that lack ergonomic considerations, potentially leading to musculoskeletal complaints, work fatigue, and reduced productivity. This community service initiative aimed to design an ergonomic work chair for the artisans based on their anthropometric data and to enhance their knowledge regarding ergonomic chair design and proper sitting posture during the batik-making process. Methods included a Participatory Action Research (PAR) approach, anthropometric measurements, educational sessions, demonstrations on using ergonomic chairs, and the handover of the chairs to the partners. Anthropometric measurements were taken from 30 artisans, including hip width, popliteal height, buttock-popliteal length, sitting shoulder height, and sitting elbow height. Data were analyzed using normality tests, uniformity tests, data adequacy tests, and percentile calculations. The analysis results indicated that all data were normally distributed, uniform, and met data adequacy requirements. Based on the 50th percentile values, the ergonomic chair dimensions were determined as follows: seat width 41 cm, seat height 31 cm, seat depth 41 cm, backrest height 54 cm, and armrest height 27 cm. Evaluation of the educational sessions via pre- and post-tests showed an increase in the average knowledge score from 49.67 to 72.00. A paired sample t-test revealed a significant difference between the pre- and post-session scores (p = 0.000). This activity successfully produced an ergonomic work chair tailored to the artisans' anthropometric characteristics and improved their understanding of ergonomic principles in batik production.
