Abstract

Background: Sleep disorders are common among the elderly and can negatively affect physical and psychological well-being and quality of life. Brain gym is a non-pharmacological intervention that may promote relaxation, reduce stress, and improve sleep quality. Purpose: This study aimed to determine the effect of brain gym on sleep quality among elderly residents of the Ina Kaka Social Welfare Institution in Ambon. Method: This study employed a quasi-experimental one-group pre-test-post-test design. The sample consisted of 20 elderly residents selected through consecutive sampling based on predetermined inclusion criteria. Sleep quality was assessed using the Pittsburgh Sleep Quality Index (PSQI) before and after the intervention. Brain gym was conducted for four weeks, three times per week, with each session lasting 15–20 minutes. Data were analyzed using a paired t-test. Results: Before the intervention, 95.2% of respondents had poor sleep quality. Following the intervention, 85% of respondents demonstrated improved sleep quality. The paired t-test showed a significant difference in PSQI scores before and after the intervention (p = 0.000; p < 0.05). Conclusion: Brain gym significantly improved sleep quality among elderly residents of PSTW Ina Kaka Ambon. Brain gym may be incorporated into routine activities in elderly social care institutions as a simple, safe, and accessible non-pharmacological intervention to support sleep quality and overall well-being.
