Abstract

Solid waste in the form of oil palm fruit bunches from the palm oil industry continues to increase and remains underutilized. The accumulation of this waste poses potential environmental problems. One effective management strategy is processing it into compost; however, the large size and hardness of the fruit bunches result in a very long decomposition time unless they are shredded first. The objective of this final project is to design an oil palm fruit bunch shredder to accelerate the decomposition process into compost. The design methodology employs the systematic VDI ​​2222 approach—covering the planning, conceptualization, design, and finalization stages—supported by simulations using SolidWorks software. The design results in specifications for a shredder featuring a mechanism to adjust the cutting gap between blades, thereby effectively meeting composting requirements.
