Abstract

Sabar Sakdremo Rice Milling business in Demangan Village, Klaten, faced operational challenges due to high mechanical breakdowns on its main diesel engine, driven by the absence of a structured preventive maintenance system and dependency on external technicians. This condition led to inflated financial expenditures, prolonged unplanned downtime, raw paddy accumulation, and reduced service quality due to order fulfillment delays. To resolve this inefficiency, this study implemented an autonomous maintenance strategy adopted from Total Productive Maintenance (TPM) and Lean Production concepts. This qualitative research employed a case study approach, gathering data through observation, in-depth interviews with the owner and operators, and business documentation, which were then analyzed using a descriptive-comparative method. The results demonstrated that the application of autonomous maintenance significantly improved operational efficiency. The total machine maintenance cost decreased from IDR 1,932,000 to IDR 999,000 (48.29% cost efficiency), and the total downtime duration was substantially cut from 18 hours 15 minutes to 5 hours 40 minutes (68.95%time efficiency). Based on the Lean approach, the new system successfully eliminated the waste of waiting and optimized time allocation through work-window management, serving as a practical reference to enhance asset utilization efficiency in small-scale rural agribusinesses.
