Reading comprehension is an essential cognitive ability supporting students' academic achievement. Previous studies examining the effect of background music on reading comprehension have produced inconsistent findings, creating the need for further investigation. This study aimed to examine the effect of jazz instrumental music on students' reading comprehension. A quantitative experimental design using a between-participant posttest-only design was employed. Thirty-eight psychology students participated and were assigned into an experimental group (n=19) and a control group (n=19). Reading comprehension was measured using a ten-item instrument developed by Widijanto et al. (2022). Data were analyzed using the Shapiro–Wilk normality test and Independent Samples t-test. The findings revealed a significant difference between the two groups (p=.009), indicating that listening to jazz instrumental music improved students' reading comprehension. These findings suggest that jazz music may serve as an alternative learning stimulus to support reading performance in highereducation.
