The aim of this research is to find out what strategies teachers use to improve beginning reading skills in grade 1 students, to find out the success factors and what obstacles are faced during learning. This research method uses a qualitative approach with descriptive methods. The research data was collected using observations of 20 grade 1 students and interviews were conducted with Indonesian language teachers and grade 1 homeroom teachers. The results of this research were 1) Indonesian language teachers used strategies to improve students' initial reading skills, namely the flashcard, phonemic and picture story methods, 2) factors that influenced success were teachers, methods used, school and family environmental factors, infrastructure, 3) obstacles faced by teachers, namely low interest and motivation of students, learning time
