Kencur (Kaempferia galanga L.) is a bio-pharmaceutical plant with significant economic, cultural, and health value for communities in Banjar Regency, South Kalimantan. The Banjar Local Variety of kencur has been cultivated traditionally for generations; however, scientific information regarding its spatial distribution, rhizome morphological characteristics, and consumer preferences remains limited. This study aims to identify the spatial distribution pattern of the Banjar Local Variety of kencur, analyze the morphological characteristics of its rhizomes, and examine consumer preferences and behavior as a basis for developing this local bio-pharmaceutical commodity. The results indicate that the Banjar Local Variety of kencur shows a clustered spatial distribution pattern in certain villages, reflecting the sustainability of cultivation based on local wisdom. Morphologically, the rhizomes are characterized by a compact and rounded shape, light brown to yellowish color, strong aroma, and distinctive spicy taste. Consumer preferences fall into good to very good categories, particularly for aroma and taste attributes, with high levels of satisfaction and purchase intention. The integration of spatial analysis and consumer preferences reveals a relationship between production center areas and market acceptance levels. Therefore, the Banjar Local Variety of kencur has strong potential to be developed as a leading bio-pharmaceutical commodity based on local genetic resources in Banjar Regency.
