Abstract

This systematic review aims to evaluate the potential of Stichopus hermanii as a natural biomaterial for bone regeneration. A systematic literature search was conducted via PubMed, Scopus, ScienceDirect and Google Scholar using keywords related to S.hermanii, bone regeneration, socket healing and biomaterials. Article selection followed the PICOS framework, encompassing both in vitro and in vivo studies. S.hermanii holds great potential as a natural biomaterial to support alveolar bone regeneration due to its osteoconductive and osteoinductive properties. Bioactive components such as collagen, glycosaminoglycans, chondroitin sulphate and essential minerals have been shown to enhance new bone formation, increase the number of osteoblasts, suppress osteoclast activity and accelerate the healing process, particularly when used in conjunction with scaffolds such as collagen or hydroxyapatite. It is concluded that S.hermanii has potential as a natural, osteoconductive and bioactive biomaterial to support alveolar bone regeneration, particularly in applications following tooth extraction, periodontal therapy and implant procedures.
