This article examines the epistemology of Nusantara tafsir through a study of the exegetical methodology employed in Tafsir Al-Ibriz, a Javanese-language commentary written by KH. Bisri Mustofa, a prominent pesantren scholar from Rembang, Central Java, in the mid-twentieth century. While previous studies have mostly discussed the cultural locality, mystical nuances, or fiqh orientation of this work, few have analyzed it through an explicit epistemological framework. Using a qualitative library research method, this study applies Muhammad Abid al-Jabiri's tripartite epistemology of bayani, burhani, and irfani, as adapted by Abdul Mustaqim for Qur'anic exegesis, to trace the epistemic foundations underlying Tafsir Al-Ibriz. The findings show that the work is epistemologically eclectic, dominated by the bayani mode through its reliance on authoritative classical commentaries and by the irfani mode through its Sufistic and local-mystical sensibility, while the burhani (rationalistic) dimension remains comparatively subdued. This eclecticism reflects a distinctive pattern of Nusantara tafsir epistemology oriented toward cultural transmission rather than philosophical argumentation.
