Grief is a universal emotional experience and an inherent part of human nature (fitrah). The Qur'an not only provides guidance on matters of faith, worship, and Islamic law but also portrays various emotional expressions through the stories of the prophets, one of which is the story of Prophet Ya'qub (Jacob) in Surah Yusuf verses 84–86. This study aims to analyze M. Quraish Shihab's interpretation of Surah Yusuf verses 84–86 in Tafsir Al-Mishbah and to examine the representation of grief expressions contained within these verses. The study employs a qualitative approach using library research. The primary sources consist of the Qur'an, particularly Surah Yusuf verses 84–86, and Tafsir Al-Mishbah by M. Quraish Shihab, while the secondary sources include books, scholarly journal articles, and relevant previous studies. The findings reveal that M. Quraish Shihab interprets Prophet Ya'qub's expressions of grief as a natural human response that does not contradict the values of faith. These expressions are manifested through interconnected stages: the verbal expression of grief (ya asafa), the physical impact reflected in the whitening of his eyes due to profound sorrow, emotional self-restraint (kazim), and the complete submission of all sorrow and anguish to Allah through the statement, innama asyku bassi wa huzni ilallah (I only complain of my anguish and grief to Allah). These findings demonstrate that Tafsir Al-Mishbah portrays grief not as a manifestation of despair, but as a spiritual process founded upon patience (sabr), steadfast faith, and trust in Allah (tawakkul) in facing loss. This study is expected to enrich the field of Qur'anic and Tafsir Studies, particularly discussions on emotional expressions in the Qur'an from the perspective of contemporary Qur'anic exegesis.
