Abstract

Growing media play an important role in the growth of katuk cuttings. This study aimed to evaluate the growth of cuttings from three katuk accessions originating from Cianjur under different growing media compositions. The experiment was conducted using a factorial Completely Randomized Design (CRD) with three replications. The first factor was katuk accession, namely Sukaresmi1, Sukaresmi2, and Gekbrong, while the second factor consisted of four growing media compositions: 100% soil, 50% soil + 50% cocopeat, 50% soil + 50% rice husk charcoal, and 50% rice husk charcoal + 50% cocopeat. The observed variables included growth characteristics, rooting characteristics, biomass production, leaf area, stomatal density, and total soluble solids (TSS). Data were analyzed using analysis of variance (ANOVA), followed by Duncan’s Multiple Range Test (DMRT) at the 5% significance level. The results showed that Sukaresmi2 exhibited the best performance in terms of shoot number, leaf number, leaflet number, and root length. The 100% soil and 50% soil + 50% rice husk charcoal media provided the best growth responses, particularly in plant height, total shoot length, leaf number, and root number. The highest TSS content was obtained in plants grown in 100% soil, whereas Gekbrong consistently produced the largest leaf area across all growing media. The highest biomass production was obtained from Sukaresmi2 grown in 50% soil + 50% rice husk charcoal, as indicated by the highest fresh and dry weights. These findings indicate that a 50% soil + 50% rice husk charcoal mixture has potential as an effective growing medium for improving katuk growth and biomass production, particularly for the Sukaresmi2 accession.
