Abstract

This study aims to determine the relationship between self-confidence and public speaking anxiety among 8th-grade students at UPT SMP Negeri 22 Medan. A quantitative correlational approach was employed, involving a population of 255 students and a sample of 72 students selected via simple random sampling. Data collection was conducted using self-confidence and public speaking anxiety scales. Prior to data collection, the research instruments underwent pilot testing to assess their suitability. Validity test results indicated that all statement items were valid, as the correlation values between item scores and total scores (r_{count}) exceeded the table value (r_{table}) (r > 0.361). Reliability testing using the Cronbach's Alpha formula yielded coefficients of 0.905 for the self-confidence scale and 0.885 for the public speaking anxiety scale; both instruments were deemed highly reliable as the values exceeded 0.6. Data analysis utilized the Pearson Product-Moment correlation test. The normality test showed a value of 0.200, indicating a normal data distribution. The linearity test yielded a "deviation from linearity" significance value of 0.519, signifying a linear negative relationship between self-confidence and public speaking anxiety. The correlation test results showed a coefficient of -0.771 with a significance level of p = 0.008 (p < 0.05), leading to the conclusion that there is a significant negative relationship categorized as "high" between self-confidence and public speaking anxiety among students at UPT SMP Negeri 22 Medan. In other words, the study's hypothesis was accepted.
