EFFECT OF HAUL ROAD GEOMETRY ON THE HAULER PRODUCTIVITY IN COAL MINING

Abstract

In surface coal mining, haul road geometry directly influences vehicle travel times, motion resistances, and production output. In May 2025, coal production at PT X reached only 95.49% (28,399.74 tons) of its 29,741 ton target due to geometric bottlenecks along the 1.45-km haul road. This study evaluates the haul road geometry against Kepmen ESDM No. 1827 K/30/MEM/2018 and AASHTO standards, analyzing the productivity gains after geometric redesign. Primary data were gathered via GNSS RTK and clinometers, followed by rimpull-based cycle time modeling on a fleet of five Hino 500 FM 280 JD dump trucks. Field results revealed geometric non-compliances, including an excessive 10.06% grade on segment B–C (standard max. 8%), narrow curve widths on segments F–G (13.56 m) and K–L (11.01 m) against the 14.57 m standard, and substandard superelevation across all curves. The actual single-truck cycle time averaged 17.43 minutes, producing 44.83 tons/hour. Following geometric improvements—cutting the B–C grade to 6.28% and widening curves—cycle time decreased by 8.77% to 15.90 minutes. Consequently, single-truck productivity increased to 49.14 tons/hour (total fleet: 245.70 tons/hour), driving monthly output to 31,130.19 tons (104.67% of the target, reflecting a 9.61% increase). Aligning mine haul road geometry with technical standards significantly optimizes hauling efficiency and ensures production targets are met.
