Abstract

Field testing duration in bridge duplication projects affects the construction schedule through critical path determination, laboratory waiting time, and the potential need for retesting. Soil testing for foundation works and concrete mix testing for superstructure components consistently appear on critical activities that require close managerial attention. This study discusses how field and laboratory testing influence project time performance and identifies practical strategies to reduce delay risks. Management approaches that balance the need for accurate technical data with project completion targets include activity overlapping, rapid testing technologies, critical chain scheduling, and coordination among field teams, laboratories, consultants, and design teams. Contractual risk allocation clauses and variability-based contingency planning are important to manage uncertainty during testing activities. Seasonal weather factors must be incorporated into testing schedules because rainfall and site conditions can affect sampling and test execution. Retesting can be minimized through preliminary testing, certified material sources, and quality control. Testing-related delays may also affect contractor cash flow through milestone payment mechanisms.
