Abstract

Successful exclusive breastfeeding depends not only on the mother but also on the father's support. However, paternal involvement in supporting breastfeeding remains suboptimal. Utilizing easily accessible educational media, such as WhatsApp and leaflets, offers a potential alternative for improving fathers' attitudes toward supporting exclusive breastfeeding. This study aimed to determine the effectiveness of using WhatsApp and leaflets on fathers' attitudes regarding exclusive breastfeeding support within the working area of the Maniangpajo Community Health Center (UPTD Puskesmas), Wajo Regency. A quantitative approach was employed using a quasi-experimental design with a pre-test and post-test control group structure. The study population consisted of fathers with infants aged 0–6 months in the Maniangpajo Community Health Center area in 2025. The sample comprised 30 respondents, divided into a WhatsApp group and a leaflet group, with 15 respondents in each. Data were collected using an attitude questionnaire administered before and after the intervention. Statistical analysis was performed based on data distribution, with a significance level of α=0.05. The results showed an improvement in fathers' attitudes following education via WhatsApp and leaflets; 76.7% of respondents demonstrated a positive attitude in the post-test. The improvement in attitudes was greater in the WhatsApp group than in the leaflet group, indicating that WhatsApp was more effective in enhancing fathers' attitudes toward supporting exclusive breastfeeding. Education using WhatsApp and leaflets can improve fathers' attitudes toward exclusive breastfeeding support, with WhatsApp demonstrating greater effectiveness than leaflets. WhatsApp has the potential to be developed as a digital educational medium for family-based breastfeeding promotion.
