Abstract

This study critically assesses the justice of Indonesia’s education system through the lens of the public versus private education divide. While private schools are often perceived to offer higher-quality education, public schools continue to serve the majority of students, especially in rural and economically disadvantaged areas. The paper examines the socio-economic factors that influence access to quality education, highlighting the disparities in infrastructure, resources, teacher quality, and extracurricular opportunities between public and private institutions. Drawing on data from national surveys, interviews with educators, and case studies of both public and private schools, the research identifies key areas where public schools lag behind in providing equitable educational opportunities. The findings indicate that while private schools often offer better facilities and personalized attention, public schools are disproportionately attended by students from lower-income families, exacerbating social inequalities. The paper argues that these disparities raise significant questions about the fairness and inclusivity of Indonesia’s education system. It concludes with policy recommendations to improve public education quality, including increased funding, targeted teacher training, and a more equitable distribution of educational resources.
