<![CDATA[The global spread of democracy in the 20th century is glaringly clear, and African states cannot be left behind in the new wave of global demand for democratic development in countries of the world. African states are bedevilled with the challenges of long years of military rule, misgovernance, corruption, and ethnic chauvinism, amongst others, and must be critically touched by global democratic sweeps in the contemporary period. The paper adopted a qualitative research design, and expressive data was collected from secondary sources such as textbooks, journals, periodicals, magazines, and official publications of organizations, amongst others. Data analysis involves the use of an interpretive, prescriptive mode of analysis dominant in qualitative research. The paper reflects on the effects of democracy on governance and politics in Africa, leading to the suppression of authoritarianism, entrenchment of constitutionalism, and state reconstruction in Africa in the 21st century. It suggests strategies to strengthen the democratic process in African states in the twenty-first century.]]>
