Pregnancy causes hormonal changes that increase the susceptibility of gingival tissues to inflammation. Poor oral and dental hygiene can lead to plaque accumulation, thereby increasing the risk of pregnancy gingivitis. Therefore, maintaining good oral hygiene essential to preserve oral health during pregnancy. This study aimed to determine the relationship between oral and dental hygiene maintenance and pregnancy gingivitis among pregnant women at Lampasi Health Center, Payakumbuh, West Sumatra. This study employed an analytical design with a cross-sectional approach. The study population consisted of all pregnant women who visited Lampasi Health Center. A total of 39 respondents were selected based on the study criteria. Data were collected using a questionnaire on oral and dental hygiene maintenance and gingival examinations using the Gingival Index (GI). Data were analyzed using univariate and bivariate analyses with the Chi-Square test at a 95% confidence level. The results showed that 20 respondents (51.3%) had good oral and dental hygiene maintenance, while 19 respondents (48.7%) had poor oral hygiene maintenance. Good pregnancy gingivitis status was found in 26 respondents (66.7%), while moderate pregnancy gingivitis was observed in 13 respondents (33.3%). The Chi-Square test showed a p-value = 0.000 (p < 0.05), indicating a significant relationship between oral and dental hygiene maintenance and pregnancy gingivitis among pregnant women. It can be concluded that better oral and dental hygiene maintenance is associated with healthier gingival conditions. Pregnant women are recommended to maintain proper oral hygiene practices and undergo regular dental check-ups throughout pregnancy to prevent pregnancy gingivitis and improve overall oral health.
