This study aimed to assess metacognitive skills and motivation in learning general biology among students at Universitas Negeri Makassar. The population of this study was all sophomore students, the class of 2017/2018, who already took a general biology course. Purposive sampling technique was implemented to choose a total of 114 students among the sophomore students who were registered in the education study program in each department. The research data were collected by using a Metacognitive Skill Inventory (MSI) and a Motivation Questionnaire developed by Keller. The study found that metacognitive skills among students in the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences Universitas Negeri Makassar have begun to develop and have developed very well. Meanwhile, the majority of the students’ motivation in learning general biology was categorized as good.
