Abstract

Academic stress is a major concern among adolescents, particularly during examinations. Accessible, low-cost, school-based interventions are needed. Objective: To explore the association between a single session of 528 Hz solfeggio frequency music and self-reported stress among twelfth-grade students. In a one-group pretest–posttest pilot study, 66 students with mild-to-moderate baseline stress (DASS-42 stress subscale: 15–25) listened to 30 minutes of 528 Hz piano instrumental music. Stress scores were measured immediately before and after the session and analysed using paired-sample t-tests. Mean stress scores decreased from 19.23±3.21 to 8.42±4.25, a mean reduction of 10.81 points (95% CI: 9.89–11.73; p < 0.001), with a very large effect size (Cohen’s d = 2.87). Moderate stress prevalence declined from 56.1% to 0%, and 87.9% of participants reached the normal stress range post-intervention. A single session of 528Hz music was associated with substantially lower self-reported stress and appears feasible as a school-based adjunctive strategy. However, the pre-experimental design precludes causal inference, and findings may reflect regression to the mean, expectancy, testing effects, or other confounders. Randomised controlled trials with active comparators, objective outcomes, and longer follow-up are required.
