Abstract

This article examines the complex discourse surrounding the Qur'anic revelation from the hermeneutical perspective of Ruhollah Mosavi Khomeini. The review considers both theoretical and practical reasoning. It begins by investigating Khomeini’s interpretation of the Prophet Muhammad’s revelatory experience, which was confirmed as a linguistic and religious text at a theoretical level. It then explores Khomeini’s hermeneutical strategy for interpreting the anthropological consequences of the revelation phenomenon, culminating in efforts to establish an Islamic government system in practice. Thus, this article addresses the question of how Khomeini’s hermeneutics of Qur'anic revelation provides a theoretical basis for the theory of Velayat-e Faqih and the Islamic Revolution of Iran. As a library study utilising written data as the main research material, this study will adopt a descriptive-analytical method to investigate Khomeini’s works as primary data and elaborate on them using various pieces of Islamic literature as secondary data. To articulate the transformation of discourse from the theoretical to the political, the article uses Ricoeur’s hermeneutical arc framework, complemented by his conceptualisation of interpretation as triple mimesis, in which human action, textual configuration, and the reader’s world are dynamically interconnected. It concludes that, by integrating Sadrian mysticism, jurisprudence, Shi’ite theology, and political theology, Khomeini interpreted revelation as both a metaphysical-linguistic and an anthropological-political event. In this interpretation, the embodiment of the Qur'an in the Prophet provides a model for divine governance in the age of occultism.
