Background: Jaw growth disorders involve malformations of and/or deviations within the relationship of the facial skeleton, specifically the maxilla and mandible. They may be consequent to a disturbance in genetic regulation of the hormones responsible for facial skeletal development, as well as the presence of a variety of both genetic and trauma-induced craniofacial disorders. As such, the aforementioned factors contribute to abnormal growth, position and symmetry of the jaw bones, potentially affecting day-to-day function in speech, mastication, and aesthetics. Objectives: This literature review aims to integrate current knowledge on the types of jaw growth disorders and their developmental characteristics within the context of craniofacial growth. Discussion: This review categorizes jaw growth disorders into sagittal, vertical, transverse, and asymmetrical growth patterns, highlighting differences in underlying developmental mechanisms, while simultaneously, comparing results across studies, which reveal consistent associations between growth disturbances and genetic factors, and environmental modifiers. Conclusion: Understanding jaw growth disorders as part of a developmental spectrum enhances understanding on the subject matter and supports early identification and preventive strategies. Integrating developmental biology with craniofacial growth research provides a framework for future longitudinal and interdisciplinary studies.
