Abstract

This study examined the relationships between societal vices, social values, and civic competence among senior secondary school students in Osun State, Nigeria. It investigated the relationships among societal vices and civic competence, social values and civic competence, and the combined influence of both factors on students' civic competence. A descriptive survey research design was adopted. The study population comprised senior secondary school students in Osun State, and a sample of 200 students was selected from four schools in the Ife Central Local Government Area using a multistage sampling procedure. Data were collected using a researcher-developed instrument, the "Societal Vices, Social Values and Civic Competence Questionnaire" (SVSVCCQ), and analyzed using frequency counts, simple percentages, and Pearson Product-Moment Correlation (PPMC). The findings revealed a significant relationship between societal vices and civic competence among the students (r = 0.882; p < 0.05). The findings further indicated that societal vices and social values are important dimensions of the social environment that are associated with students' civic competence. The study highlights the need for schools, families, and other stakeholders to strengthen positive social values and address societal vices as part of efforts to promote responsible and active citizenship among secondary school students.
