Abstract

The research entitled "Use and Implications of Sarcasm on Social Media" was prepared based on the background of researchers who are interested in the use of sarcasm by netizens on WhatsApp social media. With the aim of describing the use of language in social media as a reflection of national character. Looking at the phenomenon that we often encounter, how free social media users are to use language without any restrictions. Thus, there is a lot of positive and negative speech, and one of the most common forms of speech is sarcasm. The formulation of the research problem is (1) What is the impact of using sarcasm on social media. (2) Why do they often use sarcasm on social media? The results of this research show that (1) The use of sarcasm can disturb people around you and can cause a feeling of offense. Apart from that, the use of sarcasm can also have a wider influence and create a new culture, thereby fading the original character of the Indonesian nation. This is a bad action, because it can hurt other people's feelings, have a negative impact on other social media users, and can diminish the original character of the Indonesian nation. (2) The factor that influences the use of sarcasm is that the speaker wants to express emotions in the form of ridicule or sarcasm because he is annoyed with his speech partner. (3) For readers as literacy material so that they do not easily use words that are inappropriate and can offend other people.
