Purpose: This study examines the integration of smart mobility features in Sokoto State’s urban transit system, highlighting both the challenges and opportunities. It advocates for the adoption of intelligent transportation technologies to modernize public transport and enhance commuter experience.Design/methodology/approach: The research takes a conceptual framework approach, drawing from a broad literature review, global case studies, and industry reports to explore how technology can transform service delivery and operational efficiency in mass transit systems.Findings: Key challenges—such as unreliable service and operational inefficiencies—undermine transit efficiency in Sokoto. However, the adoption of smart technologies like ITS, GPS, integrated payments, and data-driven planning can significantly reduce costs, enhance service delivery, and support sustainable, greener public transportation models.Limitations and Research Implications: As a conceptual study, the research does not empirically test its framework or recommendations. Future research could conduct pilot projects and data analysis in Sokoto to evaluate the real-world impact of these proposed interventions.Practical Implications: This research underscores the need for policy support, community engagement, and robust public-private partnerships in successfully deploying transit innovations. It also highlights the transformative potential of smart solutions in reducing commuting delays and improving operational performance.Originality/value: The study provides a localized insight into how global smart mobility practices can be contextualized for Sokoto State. It offers a unique perspective on how intelligent transport systems can contribute to economic resilience and sustainable urbanization in emerging urban areas.
